Expedition INDEX2013-2 with RV SONNE

Expedition INDEX2013-2 with RV SONNE took place in December 2013 and led to the southern Central Indian Ridge.

By request of the German (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy) the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) investigated potential areas for the application of an exploration licence for polymetallic sulfide deposits at the International Seabed Authority (ISA). 

Objectives of the expedition were the mapping and sampling of selected ridge segments and flancs as well as of active and inactice metallic sulfide deposits.

ROV KIEL 6000 was one of the deployed tools and accomplished 11 scientific dives in water depths of more than 3000 m. Main tasks were mapping and sampling of metallic sulfides, sediments, rocks and fluids and the detailed investigation of biodiversity in the vicinity of active and inactive hydrothermal vent fields. The tasks formed an important basis for the application of the exploration licence at ISA on 12th of December, 2013.
