Research interests

My research focusses on the turbulent nature of the ocean, covering scales from millimeters up to hundreds of kilometers. In particular, I am interested in (sub-) mesoscale variability, flow instabilities, ageostrophy, diapycnal mixing processes and the physical-biogeochemical coupling at these scales. I combine observation based data with numerical model simulations to learn about these processes.

Physical-biogeochemical interactions across scales: from microscale to mesoscale

Recent field work

In April / May 2017 a submesoscale process study off Peru was carried out in the framework of the SFB 754 Subproject B9, which included a glider swarm experiment and interdisciplinary biogeochemical observations of cold filaments.

During my PhD we already carried out observations of meso- and submesoscale variability off Peru (Thomsen et al. 2016a,b, Köhn et al. 2017).
