Research interests

My research focusses on the turbulent nature of the ocean, covering scales from millimeters up to hundreds of kilometers. In particular, I am interested in (sub-) mesoscale variability, flow instabilities, ageostrophy, diapycnal mixing processes and the physical-biogeochemical coupling at these scales. I combine observation based data with numerical model simulations to learn about these processes.

Recent field work

Right now we carry out a submesoscale process study off Peru in the framework of the SFB 754 Subproject B9. This includes a glider swarm experiment, which can be followed live here. During my PhD we already carried out observations of meso- and submesoscale variability off Peru (Thomsen et al. 2016a,b).
