The aim of the study is to quantify and better understand the supply of oxygen to the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Tropical North Atlantic with a particular focus on the role and efficiency of submesoscale processes for lateral and vertical oxygen transfer. A tracer release experiment is conducted in order to quantify diapycnal and, most importantly, lateral mixing rates in the region. 100 kg of CF3SF5 were injected in the centre of the OMZ at the end of 2012. The tracer distribution is mapped during three subsequent cruises. The tracer experiment results is complemented with shipboard and glider based hydrographic and oxygen measurements and compared to models.
