Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics

Research topics

Main foci of research in the research unit Theory and Modelling include:

 - the decadal variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its response to gradually changing atmospheric conditions, trends in the sub-arctic hydrological cycle, and changes in the supply routes of upper-layer and intermediate waters from and into the South Atlantic; 

- the dynamics of tropical circulation systems, including equatorial jets and subtropical-tropical circulation systems (STCs), and its role in decadal-scale variations in regional sea level, sea surface temperatures and supply of oxygen and nutrients to the eastern tropical upwelling regions

- the 3d-(overturning)-circulation in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) regime whose response to trends in the Southern Hemisphere westerlies as projected in climate change simulations would have major consequences for the oceanic uptake (or release) of CO2

- the representation of fundamental processes in ocean models, including subgrid-scale parameterization.
