Marine Ecology

Marine microbial diversity

The diversity of microbes in the ocean is immense and widely unknown: We know to date approx. less than 0.1% of all microbes living in the oceans. An individual sample of marine sediment may contain more than 10.000 different microbial species in a cm3 or ml. Thus, the analysis of microbial biodiversity in marine habitats and the measurement of environmental influences thereon is still a great challenge, in particular if it comes to define the organisms at species level and calculate their abundance as well as define the function of the community members.
