Marine Ecology

Besides curricular teaching in the master course "Biological Oceanography", the Research Unit Marine Microbiology (RU MI) contributed to the education of technicians in biology (BTA) by cooperation with the Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Schule in Neumünster, of biotechnology engineers by cooperation with the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and of students and pupils in internships. In total, 28 persons passed a practical training from 2010 to 30.04.2013.

RU MI organises in the frame of KiWIZ regular summer schools, such as the annual summer school on “Marine Biotechnology and Natural Products”, which is co-organised with the School of Life Sciences at the University for Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in Muttenz/Basel since 2009 for selected Swiss students. It is an optional module in the frame of studies on molecular life sciences with the title “Research in the context of knowledge and application”. This summer school is a highly appreciated choice of the Swiss students. It gives a comprehensive introduction to the marine natural product research from the sampling on board of a research vessel to isolation and identification of the bacteria, to chemical extraction and purification and to testing of bioactivities within the frame of the possibilities available at the KiWiZ Research Laboratories. Each year there are 10 students.

In addition, an international summer school on “Methods in Biotechnology” in 2011 was organised with 35 participants from universities, companies and research institutions from China, Brazil, Spain, Lithuania, Vietnam, Belgium and Germany in 2011 together with the Helmut-Schmidt-University Hamburg and the cluster BIOCATALYSIS2021 (BMBF initiative). Contributions from industry were presented by the companies BioLogics Richter-Helm, GE Healthcare, Knauer, BioSilta and Hamilton. The graduate students contributed to the topic with oral presentations and posters from their current research. Lively discussions complemented the lectures. Approximately 40 participants have attended this course.
