General information
SO225 MANIHIKI II-Leg 2 conducts multidisciplinary studies (volcanological, geochronological, geochemical, and paleoceanographic) on the Manihiki Plateau (SW Pacific), building on the results of the SO193 MANIHIKI cruise and SO224 - MANIHIKI II. Volcanological, geochronological and geochemical studies (e.g., with stratigraphically controlled ROV sampling) should help to define the temporal, spatial and compositional evolution of the igneous basement of the Manihiki Plateau in greater detail. The paleoceanographic studies are aimed at reconstructing the Plio-Pleistocene dynamics and evolution of the West-Pacific Warm Water Pool and indentifying possible driving mechanisms through the Southern Ocean (“ocean tunnel hypothesis”).
