GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a

Scientific employee (PhD-candidate) position

starting on November 1st 2017. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral degree in natural sciences.

Job Description / Project Description

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in modelling marine biogeochemical cycles and their role in the Earth system. The research project will focus on better quantifying the global transport, transformation, and fate of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus as these elements pass from terrestrial systems to the open-ocean or are retained with coastal seas. The extent to which human activities modify the lateral transfer or loss of these elements from pelagic marine waters will also be investigated.  The research will be conducted with an Earth system model of intermediate complexity so that links and possible feedbacks between regional biogeochemical cycling and the global Earth system can be investigated as well.

Qualification

We are looking for a creative and ambitious modeller with a university degree at the M.Sc. or Diploma level in a natural sciences subject and extensive knowledge of ecological, biogeochemical or Earth system modelling.

The position is limited to 3 years. Salary and social benefits are according to 75% of Germany’s public sector TVöD 13 scale. The position cannot be split.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.
