Sino-German Cooperation

Since 2004, GEOMAR together with the University of Kiel (CAU) maintains a close cooperation in marine sciences with the Ocean University of China (OUC) in Qingdao. Further cooperation partners are the University of Bremen and the associated Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT). Objectives of the cooperation are a long-term contribution to an international education and the faciliation of scientific exchange by linking-up the research groups of both countries. The Sino-German Initiative on Marine Sciences was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (MoE) until September 2011, and paved the way for corporate long-term objectives.

The inauguration of the Center for Sino-German Cooperation in Marine Sciences took place in Qingdao in February 2011. Under the umbrella of this institution, previous bilateral educational activities between German and Chinese partners will be continued on an ongoing basis. With its versatile facilities for notable PhD education the Integrated School of Ocean Sciences (ISOS) of the Cluster of Excellence “Future Ocean” will support these activities. Further important goals consolidating the tie between both countries are the collaboration in scientific research and the build-up of an alumni network.

Within the primary objective of an internationalized education, comprehensive curricula were developed and expanded in cooperation with the OUC, facilitating the exchange of master students in marine sciences. Annual summer schools take place in China and Germany alternatly since 2005. Further activities include the exchange of PhD candidates and visiting lecturers, the organisation of scientific workshops, and the implementation of joint research projects.
