ROV Team


The GEOMAR ROV team comprises 8 members with the following main tasks:


Dr. Friedrich Abegg: Scientific Coordinater, Geologist

  • Tasks: Cruise planning and coordination, logistics, administration, budgetting, data archiving, navigation, pilot

Dipl.-Ing. Martin Pieper: Technical Coordinator,  Mechanics/ Hydraulics Engineer

  • Tasks: supervisor, servicing/maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic components of the ROV system (propulsion system, hydraulic units, manipulators, hydraulic sampling systems etc.), development, design (CAD) and construction of components and scientific modules on the ROV, ROV pilot

Arne Meier: Industrial Electronic Technician

  • Tasks: installation, implementing, maintenance, fault finding, repair and operation of electrical equipment , engines and hyraulics of the ROV system, servicing/maintenance of winch during deployments, production/adaptation of ROV tools, ROV pilot

Dipl.-Ing. Hannes Huusmann: Mediatechnology Engineer 

  • Tasks: servicing/maintenance and advancement of camera and lighting technology, management and post- processing of video data, servicing/maintenance of electronic and sensory ROV components (telemetry, pan/tilt units, navigational systems, deck control units etc.), ROV pilot

Dipl.-Ing. Patrick Cuno: IT-engineer

  • Tasks: Ethernet-based network programming, supervision of a SQL-based real-time database, interface programming for scientific modules, servicing/maintenance of soft- and hardware, ROV pilot

Dr. Inken Suck: Biologist

  • Tasks: Logistics, cruise plannung, acquisition, scientific payload, administering web pages, data archive, public relations, ROV pilot 

B. Eng. Matthias Bodendorfer: Mechatronics Engineer

  • Tasks: Installation, operation and maintenance of electric and electronic components of ROV System (vehicle and winch), sensors, ROV pilot

B. Eng. Torge Matthiessen: Mechanical Engineer

  • Tasks: Maintenance and repair of hydraulics and propulsion systems, production/ adaptation of ROV tools, ROV pilot
