Expedition POS434 with RV Poseidon: Installation MoLab

Chief Scientist: Dr. Olaf Pfannkuche, GEOMAR Kiel

On 27th of May, 2012, RV Posidon left Bergen, Norway, heading for the Sjernsund in Northern Norway. In this sound, which is located between Tromsoe and Hammerfest and  which hosts one of the northernmost cold water coral reefs, the underwater observatory MoLab was to be installed. One of the tools to do so was the "small" GEOMAR ROV PHOCA.

During its maiden trip, PHOCA accomplished 7 scientific dives despite some technical problems. Its main tasks were reconaissance, inspection and documentation of the sea floor and the deployed MoLab modules, as well as the deployment of autonomously measuring tools, e.g. Eddy Correlation System.

RV Poseidon arrived at Tromsoe on the 7th of June for disembarkation of most scientists and technicians, and returned to Kiel on the 15th of June, 2012.
