Customs Clearance and Export Control

The institute participates in numerous expeditions every year and imports goods from none EU countries. Any flow of goods (e.g., expeditions, airfreight, purchases, hand luggage, etc.), whether imported or exported, must be cleared through customs.

Customs clearance is the customs or tax treatment of a product. The work of the custom office covers a wide range of legal areas. For example, additional regulations to the conventional customs regulations in cross-border goods traffic have to be observed.

Export control is an internationally managed legal instrument, which focuses on the security-relevant, cross-border exchange of goods and services. The foreign trade with strategically important goods (mainly weapons, armaments and dual-use goods) is controlled. The latter so-called "dual-use" goods include goods, software and technology that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

In order for the flow of goods to proceed smoothly, it is compulsory to discuss all imports and exports with the customs officers beforehand and to use the central email address zoll(at) to inform the officers.
