New GEOMAR building

Central Core Repository and Extension Building on GEOMAR East shore Campus

By end of 2021, the so-called extension building of GEOMAR at the east shore campus (former fish market) will be finalised. Then, GEOMAR will accommodate all the research units with about 1,000 employees on a central campus and not distributed over the city of Kiel as before.

At another construction site east shore campus, the central core repository is currently being built with an adjacent parking lot.  

On the following pages we would like to inform you regularly about the current developments at the two major construction sites.

  • The mission of GEOMAR is:

    To investigate the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes in the ocean and their interaction with the seafloor and the atmosphere.

  • The GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is member of the Helmholtz Association, the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung and the German Marine Research Konsortium (KDM).

    On the international level, the institute cooperates with many institutions in the field of marine sciences. It is a member of the "Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans" (POGO).
