Research interests

My research focusses on the turbulent nature of the ocean, covering scales from millimeters up to hundreds of kilometers. In particular, I am interested in (sub-) mesoscale variability, flow instabilities, ageostrophy, diapycnal mixing processes and the physical-biogeochemical coupling at these scales. I combine observation based data with numerical model simulations to learn about these processes. Recently the regional focus lies on eastern boundary upwelling regimes including the Peruvian, Mauritanian and Bengula systems.

Physical-biogeochemical interactions across scales: from microscale to mesoscale

Recent field work

In April / May 2017 a submesoscale process study off Peru was carried out in the framework of the SFB 754 Subproject B9, which included a glider swarm experiment and interdisciplinary biogeochemical observations of cold filaments.

During my PhD we already carried out observations of meso- and submesoscale variability off Peru (Thomsen et al. 2016a,b, Köhn et al. 2017).
