Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics

North Atlantic Nest at 1/20°

Global Bathymetry (based on BlueMarble by the NASA Visible Earth Project). Boundaries of the AGRIF nest are shown as yellow frame.

To investigate the effects of Greenland melting onto the North Atlantic circulation and Atlantic Meridional Overturning, a 1/20° nest of the polar/subpolar North Atlantic is hosted in a global ocean at 1/4° (ORCA025). The very fine resolution in this region is necessary to allow the representation of narrow rim currents and mesoscale eddies in the Labrador Sea.

Simulations were finished in 2014.The successor configuration, covering the whole Atlantic, is VIKING20X.

Person in charge: Erik Behrens, Klaus Getzlaff

  • NEMO ocean
  • LIM2 sea ice (elastic-viscous rheology)
  • Tripolar ORCA grid
  • Total Grid Points: 208 Mill
  • Grid Points: 1784 x 1719 x 46
  • Typical Grid Point Distance: < 3km at 60°N

  • Spin-up (host model only): ORCA025 (1978-2009)
  • Hindcast experiment (1948-2009)
  • Sensitivity runs (freshwater hosing)

Simulations and numerical experiments with this configuration are mostly done using high performance computing facilities at HLRN.
