3. Present-day water column (GEOTRACES)

Several trace metals and their isotope compositions (TEIs) can be used as proxies for the chemical composition and physical state of the past ocean. The sources, sinks and present-day distribution of these proxies, as well as the biogeochemical cycles that govern the distribution are, however, in many cases insufficiently understood. The goal of the international GEOTRACES Program is to close these gaps in understanding. www.geotraces.org
