Study Oceanography

The scope of physical oceanography, as part of geo sciences, are physics of the ocean and its interaction with the atmosphere. Its central goal is the description and explanation of complex dynamics in the ocean on various space and time scales. Comprehensive courses are offered in regional, observational, and theoretical oceanography.

Training of an oceanographer is based on solid knowledge of physics and mathematics which are the main emphasis. Practical courses in observational methods and numerical simulation form an essential component of the curriculum, complemented by extensive sea-going experience. The majority of students participates in current oceanographic research, funded by student research assistant contracts.
