Host-microbe cross talk in the early metazoan taxa Porifera and anthozoan Cnidaria

Title
Host-microbe cross talk in the early metazoan taxa Porifera and anthozoan Cnidaria
General information
In this project we will explore the mechanisms of interaction between the innate immune system of the host and host-colonizing bacteria. We will further characterize the influence of specific bacteria upon host development and fitness. The results will provide insights into novel and evolutionarily ancient mechanisms of bacterial recognition in Nematostella as well as in two sponge species that are responsible for homeostasis and for bacterial function within the metaorganism.
