GEOMAR is located at the west shore (Düsternbrooker Weg 20) and the east shore Wischhofstr. 1-3 (former fish market) of the Kiel Fjord. In addition, parts of the institutes are located in the Hohenbergstrasse (Research Division Marine Ecology - Benthos Ecology) and at "Am Kiel Kanal" (GEOMAR Biotech). Public transportation between the west and the east shore is either available by bus or with the public ferry F2 (Schwentine line).
The west shore building of the institute and the public aquarium are located at the shore of the Kiel Fjord between the cruise liner terminal ("Ostseeterminal") and the provincial government ("Landeshaus").
By train or bus:
From main train station / central bus station (ZOB) take bus no. 41/42 (bus stop at the western exit of the train station - street name “Spohienblatt”, direction “Tannenberg” (41) resp. Suchsdorf (42) and exit at stop “Schwanenweg / Düsternbrooker Weg” (at the parking lot of the institute). Travel time app. 10 min.
Taxi takes about 5 min, walking time about 25 min (via shopping mall Sophienhof, pedestrian zone “Holstenstraße” to “Dänische Strasse” (via “Alter Markt”), and “Schlossgarten”.
By car:
The motorway A215 terminates at West Ring (1. traffic light). Drive straight ahead (“Schützenwall”) and follow the signs to "Zentrum-Fähren" (centre/ferries). After 1,2 km, 6th traffic light at “Exerzierplatz” turn right and follow the street to the water front (0,6 km). There, turn left on “Kaistraße”, drive straight on, pass-by the “Ostsee Terminal” (cruise liner terminal). To your left the old building of the art gallery appears. About 100 metres the GEOMAR west shore building is located on the right side (large white building, no. 20). Please note that parking options are very limited in the vicinity of the institute.
If you arrive by ferry from Oslo or Gothenburg you can see the GEOMAR building at the west shore of Kiel Fjord close to the ferry terminals.
By plane:
From Hamburg Airport: Take the airport shuttle "Kielius" to Kiel. The bus ride takes about 90 min and terminates at the train station.
From Lübeck: By train via Lübeck main station (change there for Kiel). The train ride to Kiel main station takes about 80 min.
The east shore campus of GEOMAR is located on the former fish market at the opening of the Schwentine river.
By train or bus:
From the main train station / central bus station (ZOB): By taxi (about 10-12 Euro) or by bus (lines 11, 60S, 100, 200/201). Bus stops in front of the main station (west exit/Sophienblatt). Lines 60S and 200/201 are express lines (15 min.). Exit at bus stop "Seefischmarkt" and follow the signs to "GEOMAR".
By car:
1. Via A7 from Hamburg: leave A7 at junction “Bordesholmer Dreieck” to A215 (Kiel). Leave A215 at last exit to east shore (Ostufer), B76 direction Lübeck. Leave B76 to B502 direction “Ostufer/Laboe”. Follow B502 about 4 km, follow traffic signs to GEOMAR (see map for details). Sufficient parking options are available on the campus.
2. Via A7 from Flensburg/Schleswig: leave A7 at junction with A210 in “Rendsburg” direction Kiel. A210 meets A215 about 2 km before the exit A210 to B76. See further details under item 1.
