GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit “Biological Oceanography, Microbial Biogeochemistry” of the research division “Marine Biogeochemistry” is offering a

PhD-candidate position

starting on April 1st 2018.


Job Description:
The successful candidate will conduct sea-going and experimental studies on the microbial turnover of organic matter in the Arctic Ocean.

Qualification:
A requirement for this position is a completed university degree (diploma or Master) relating to Biological Oceanography. Basic knowledge of Physical and Chemical Oceanography is expected. Experiences with the methods of measuring organic compounds and their microbial degradation in seawater are desirable. The position requires participation in several long-term sea-going expeditions to the Arctic. A precondition for this position is therefore experience with ship-based expeditions as well as the ability and willingness for sea-going research.

The position is limited to 3 years. Salary and social benefits are according to 75% of Germany’s public sector TVöD 13 scale. The position cannot be split.
