GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. The Collaborative Project CUSCO (Coastal Upwelling System in a Changing Ocean) is a joint project between GEOMAR and several other German research institutes and universities, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), to better understand dynamics of trophic fluxes and productivities in the Humboldt upwelling system, the eastern boundary upwelling system with by far the largest fish productivity.

Research assistant position in ocean-ecosystem modelling

within CUSCO (start date 10/2018, subject to final approval by the BMBF), starting on January 1st 2019 or earlier.

Job Description
● This position is devoted to understanding the relations of biogeochemical cycling, higher trophic levels (especially anchovy) and environmental conditions in the Humboldt upwelling system, with the specific goal to investigate energy fluxes amongst trophic levels and the sensitivity of the system to climate variability, based on an “end-to-end”  model approach.
● The main task will be the implementation of an individuum-based fish model in an existing regional ocean circulation-biogeochemical model, and to evaluate this newly developed end-to-end model framework. The long-term goal of this work is to assess the short to long term temporal variability of fish productivity and its relationship to primary productivity and biogeochemical cycling under IPCC climate scenarios for the 21st century.
● Applicants must hold a Master or PhD in marine sciences or a related field, preferably with a strong background in biological oceanography and climate modelling. Experience with a regional ocean model (e.g., ROMS) and/or fish model (e.g., OSMOSE) will be considered a strong asset. Knowledge of a programming tool for data analysis and visualization is required, and proficiency in Fortran or Java is highly beneficial.

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. The vacancy will be filled preferably with a 2-year full-time postdoc, with the potential of extension depending on funding availability, or alternatively with a 3-year part-time (75%) PhD. The position cannot be split. Flexible work models are possible.
