The Project
Mn-nodules are seen as optional metal resource of Ni, Co, Co and other metals. Large quantities of Mn-nodules exist in the Pacific ocean in the so called CCZ where European countries hold exploration incenses, among them Germany and Belgium. In this respect the Belgium dredging company DEME is leading the COMPASS project to advance automated seafloor mapping, reserve evaluation and steering the mining vehicle in such a way that it is efficient but also as environmentally friendly as possible. Three software modules will be developed that depend on each other. One is the DTM-Module that automatically processes AUV-based multibeam data and derives bathymetric and backscatter derivatives. Together with ground truth data these input data layers are used by the Reserve-Assessment-Module to generate reliable and high resolution maps economically, geologically and environmentally relevant information. This information is used by the Ideal-Mining-Path-Module that feeds information towards the mining vehicle control to manoeuvre the vehicle in an optimised way over the seafloor in more than 4000m water depth.

As part of the project team, you will be responsible to develop the DTM-Module and Reserve-Assessment-Module based on existing workflows established within the DeepSea Monitoring Group at GEOMAR. You will become part of this group that includes geoscientists, computer scientists and software developers alike.

Our expectations
You will work as one of two new employees in the COMPASS Project and will closely cooperate with scientists and software developers of the DSM Group.

• You will advance already existing workflows for the DTM-Module and the Reserve-Assessment-Module concept
• You will integrate image processing algorithms developed by DSM Group members in the workflow to streamline the reserve assessment and derive a multitude of data layers that are used by the Ideal-Mining-Path-Module
• You will closely cooperate with the saltation GmbH in Bielefeld to implement your workflow and algorithms into a professional software tool; this includes longer stays in Bielefeld (Germany) and Ghent (Belgium)


Your Qualification
• You are a geoscientist in the field of geology, geophysics, geo-informatics, hydrography or similar with some kind of understanding about marine mineral resources
• You have a good understanding of multibeam mapping and related backscatter analyses
• You have worked with multibeam processing software packages as MB-Systems or Qimera, ideally with AUV-based data sets
• You are familiar with GIS applications as ArcGIS, QGIS, SAGA GIS
• Ideally you have knowledge in applying machine learning or cluster algorithms as Random Forests or ISODATA in frameworks like SAGA or R.
• You have programming skills to develop script code as in e.g. GMT or R and are knowledgeable in Python, C#, or even C++
• Your fluently spoken and writing languages include English and German

The position is available for a funding period of three years until 30 June 2021. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German pay scale for public employees. This is a half-time position (50%); the position cannot be split.
