Post-doctoral position Biogeochemical Modelling

Deadline: 31 July 2018

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

DynaTrait is a Priority Program of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft: DFG) entitled: “Flexibility Matters: Interplay between Trait Diversity and Ecological Dynamics Using Aquatic Communities as Model Systems”

The research unit Biogeochemical Modelling is offering a

Post-doctoral position for modelling seasonal vertical migration in zooplankton

within the DynaTrait project, starting on September 1st 2018 or later.

Job Description
· Identification and modelling of traits suitable for characterising seasonal vertical migration (SVM) in marine zooplankton in the framework of a local (1D) plankton ecosystem model.
· Simulation and analysis of relations between SVM and differences in the ecology and biogeochemistry of low- and high-latitude ocean regions with local (1D) and global (3D) models.
· Simulation of the long-term evolution of SVM traits and analysis of consequences for large-scale ecological and biogeochemical patterns on long time scales.

Qualification
· Applicants should hold a PhD in marine sciences or a related field, preferably with a strong background in environmental sciences and/or plankton modelling.
· Experience with trait-based or adaptive modelling as well as 1D and 3D biogeochemical modelling will be considered strong assets.
· Proficiency in Fortran and/or other programming tools is also highly beneficial.

The position is available for three years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split. Flexible working time models are generally possible.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply.  Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
