If you are considering to join GEOMAR for a PhD project feel free to contact the Early Career Support Staff (cf. contact info box to the right).

When you are about start your PhD project at GEOMAR: Follow these seven steps to join the GEOMAR PhD community. Welcome!

Seven steps to join the GEOMAR PhD community

1. Get hold of your Welcome Package
Upon your first contact with the administration you'll receive our Welcome Package for PhD candidates with a "Guide to your first steps to settle in Kiel", compiled by the DokTeam (see below), as well as a bunch of useful information material about GEOMAR and the ISOS graduate school (see below). You may also contact the Early Career Support Staff (cf. top right contact info box) within the GEOMAR directorate team to receive your personal copy.

2. Meet your PhD representatives
The DokTeam is the institutional representation of all GEOMAR PhD students. Please get in touch with any kind of questions and suggestions!

3. Enroll at ISOS (Integrated School of Ocean Sciences)

We recommend that doctoral candidates at GEOMAR join the “Integrated School of Ocean Sciences” (ISOS) by submitting an application through their website. The ISOS is part of the Cluster of Excellence The Future Ocean and the central platform for all doctoral candidates in marine sciences at GEOMAR and Kiel University. It provides an excellent and diverse programme for all-round personal support, rangig from co-supervision to courses, events, financial support and exposure to multidisciplinary marine topics. Here, doctoral candidates also look out beyond their specific disciplinary horizon and consider career options for after the PhD. Enrollment is a pre-condition to participate in the courses and for financial support for travel to conferences, training events and PhD miniproposals. Find out more at http://www.futureocean.org/isos.

4. Make use of our mailing lists
As a member of the mailing list of all PhD students in the marine sciences in Kiel "phd-news" you receive a wealth of useful information on e.g. job advertisements, summer schools and conferences. We recommend that you register as described here. A few more GEOMAR-specific pieces of information will be shared via the GEOMAR PhD mailing list. After having registered as a PhD candidate at the GEOMAR computing center youradress(at)geomar.de will be added to the mailing list. Should you not have been subscribed automatically, please get in touch with the DokTeam or the Early Career Support Staff (cf. top right contact info box).

5. Enroll as PhD student at CAU (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kie)
Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) offers information for international and German PhD students. Being enrolled as PhD student at CAU you have access to the CAU Graduate Center and all its services (e.g.support with formalities like visa, housing, sports facilities, public transport, etc.).

6. Register your dissertation project
Register your dissertation project at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences using the form available on the faculty website. This ensures that the necessary formalities are fulfilled early in the registration process and are separate from the admission precedure to the doctoral examination itself (do not wait until you hand in your thesis). Have a look at  their check list for doctoral candidates.

7. Contact GEOMAR's Early Career Support staff
GEOMAR's Early Career Support Staff within the GEOMAR directorate (cf. top right contact info box) is the focus point for all PhD issues and is in constant exchange with the DokTeam and ISOS (see above). We also provide consultance concerning career options and all contacts necessary to secure a smooth start into a successful PhD project.
