At the beginning of a GAME project all participants meet at GEOMAR.
GAME connects 35 research institutes in 26 countries.
An intense method training in March prepares the teams for the project.
Study questions and methods are talked over in group discussions...
...and in small teams.
All methods are tested in the laboratory...
...and in the field.
This also may include snorkeling...
...what is a challenge in the icecold Baltic Sea in March.
After the introductory course the teams leave for their destinations. For example Madeira Island.
The marine research station is located in the island's capitol Funchal...
...and has direct access to the sea. Perfect conditions for GAME experiments.
In 2014 Laura and Lisa worked here to investigate the effects of microplastic particles on barnacles and sea cucumbers.
In 2015 GAME investigates the tolerance of sea anemones to ocean warming.
GAME projects require practical skills, since all set-ups are self-made.
Maintaining the set-up during the experiments is the most laborious part of each project.
Welcome to Bogor! The Bogor Agricultural University is the home of GAME in Indonesia.
For their experiments, Sinja and Nisa collected greenlip mussels from the Bay of Jakarta.
Yuli taking sediment samples on one of the 1000 islands in Jakarta Bay...
...and while exchanging the water in the experimental containers.
Nisa while searching for sea cucumbers.
Sunset in Bogor. The view from the Uni campus is spectacular.
The city of Coquimbo surrounds the Bay of Herradura. This is the base for GAME in Chile.
Macroalgae are a key component of the benthic communities here and were the subject of several GAME studies.
Vanessa and Valeria after taking sediment samples from the shallow waters near Coquimbo.
In Coquimbo the GAME teams use outdoor mesocosms for their research what allows them to work with natural light.
Madgalena deploying containers, which are filled with virgin microplastic material, in the field.
Benthos sampling using a small research vessel in the Bay of Herradura.
The Brazilian GAME partner institute is located in Niterói at the Bay of Guanabara.
Bruno collecting mussels from rocks near at a beach close to Niterói...
...and in the lab at the Universidade Federal Fluminense.
Juliana taking measurements from an experimental aquarium in the lab.
Eduardo checking the salinity of the sea water in the aquaria with a refractometer.
The Japanese GAME partner institute is in the Bay of Akkeshi in the west of Hokkaido.
The guest house of the institute. With a nice ocean view.
Myriam...
...and Haruka collecting lugworms at low tide in the Akkeshi lagoon.
The experimental set-up for the GAME 2014 project at the Akkeshi Marine Station.
A close-up of the set-up in 2013.
When in Japan, you need to try all the food!
The view from the marine station in Tvaerminne, Finland.
When Ulrike started her work in Tvaerminne in April, the Baltic Sea was still covered with ice.
On the way to the sampling site.
The experimental set-up for GAME 2011 was placed on top of the roof of the Tvaerminne Station - because of the light.
