Titel
Ocean Glow: Controls on ocean productivity using ocean fluorescence detected from space
Kurzbeschreibung
Phytoplankton growth in the global ocean is typically limited by nutrient availability, but observations of nutrient limitation are currently restricted to snapshot observations made on research cruises. There is therefore currently no way to observe nutrient limitation at a global scale or how it is changing through time. This project aims to tackle this using fluorescence signals emitted from phytoplankton and detected by satellite sensors in space. The project is funded by a European Research Council (ERC) starting grant over five years and will involve a combination of growing phytoplankton under controlled conditions in the laboratory, making observations on research cruises in the field, and then applying our findings to the satellite record.
