Is deep-sea marine mining an option?

OECD expert meeting in Kiel discussing prospects of marine resources

November 28, 2014/Kiel. On Thursday and Friday of last week, GEOMAR, together with the Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung (KDM), hosted an international workshop of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on the prospects and challenges of deep-sea mining.  The workshop was attended by 27 world leaders from the mining industry, government, and academia who addressed the economic imperatives of deep-sea mining and the scientific, technological, and regulatory advances necessary for the development of a future deep-sea mining industry.  The results of the workshop will form part of a comprehensive report of the OECD on the Future Ocean Economy to 2030.

The workshop was held in the Cabinet Chambers of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein.  Support for the workshop was provided by the OECD, the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, The EU 7th Framework Programme on “Blue Mining” (project 604500), and the U.S. Consul General in Hamburg.
