16 June 2026: Behind the Scenes of Ocean Research
Public Tour at GEOMAR
How do GEOMAR scientists explore the ocean? What technologies do they use, and what happens to the samples collected from seafloors around the globe? Find out the answers to these questions and more on a guided tour of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
On Tuesday, 16 June 2026, from 16:00 to 17:30, the research centre is inviting interested visitors to take part in a tour of its main facilities. The tour will be led by Gerd Hoffmann-Wieck, who has been providing insights into GEOMAR’s work for many years.
Participants will explore the main building, gaining exclusive access to the seawater supply system, which pumps fresh Baltic Sea water into the laboratories continuously. In the Seagoing Technologies area, visitors will learn how global expeditions are equipped and how specialised instruments are developed, built and maintained before being deployed in the depths of the ocean. The tour also includes the Core Repository, where visitors will discover how metre-long sediment cores are collected from the seafloor and what information they can provide about climate history.
The tour is open to anyone interested in learning more about GEOMAR’s work. No prior knowledge is required.
