Surfacing the Unseen - A Mural for Sustainable Oceans
Unveiling of a mural depicting the treasures of the Baltic Sea
What kinds of creatures live in the Baltic Sea? What lies beneath the surface that we can’t see directly? How do animals stay warm in the water? How do we study the Baltic Sea in the first place? What kinds of treasures can be found in the water and on the beach?
To answer these questions, GEOMAR and Gaarden Elementary School collaborated on an Engage Community Project. Afterward, the students used what they had learned to create their own underwater world. This artwork then served as inspiration for artist Marina Merino to create a mural at the Seefischmarkt opposite the GEOMAR entrance, which will be unveiled on June 8.
Date: Monday, June 8, 2026, starting at 11 a.m.
Meeting point: GEOMAR Building 8a, Wischhofstr. 1-3, 24148 Kiel
