Prof. Deniz Tasdemir receives Waters Award for Excellence in Natural Products Innovation
Prof. Deniz Tasdemir, the head of RU Marine Natural Products Chemistry and the director of GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology (GEOMAR-Biotech) of the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel has been selected for this year’s Waters Award for Excellence in Natural Products Innovation. The Waters award is given to a scientist whose collective body of research exemplifies the concept of outstanding innovation in natural products research. The award has been delivered at the 9th Joint Natural Products Conference 2016 (JNPC 2016) that was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, 24-27 July 2016.
Marine biotechnology that uses state-of-the-art analytical, chemical and microbiological work is a particularly promising and innovative sector not only for pharmaceutical sector, but also for applications in the cosmetics and food products. At GEOMAR research in this field is carried out for several years. In 2014, Prof. Dr. Deniz Tasdemir. an internationally recognized expert in marine natural product chemistry and biotechnology, joined GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. Prof. Tasdemir leads the research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry and is also Director of the GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology (GEOMAR-Biotech).
The award was delivered at the 9th Joint Natural Products Conference 2016 (JNPC 2016) that was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, 24-27 July 2016. The JNPC is the largest natural product conference worldwide and organized every four years jointly by the five largest learned natural product societies from the USA [American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP)] and Europe [The Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA), The Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), Società Italiana di Fitochimica (SIF), Association Francophone pour l’Enseignement et la Recherche en Pharmacognosie (AFERP)]. This year also The Japanese Society of Pharmacognosy (JSP) was involved.
As awardee, Prof. Tasdemir gave a keynote lecture entitled “Dealing with Dark Matter(s) in the Ocean: Challenges and Opportunities”. She was introduced at the symposium by a representative of Waters, which is one of the largest manufacturer of chromatographic and analytical chemistry equipment worldwide. The award trophy was presented by Waters at the JNPC banquet.
The Waters Award for Excellence in Natural Products Innovation has been initiated in 2015. Prof. Tasdemir says: “Recognition always brings motivation. This award gave me the opportunity to highlight our world-class research at GEOMAR, a world-class institution in ocean research, to a very large international audience of natural product research.”
Prof. Tasdemir has been the recipient of several other prestigious awards of the learned natural product societies, such as the Pierre Fabre Prize of the Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE) in 2004 and Egon Stahl Silver Medal of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA) in 2005.
