ELMA II: Influence of light pollution on the growth of marine epiphytes

ACRONYM
ELMA II
Title
ELMA II: Influence of light pollution on the growth of marine epiphytes
General information
In this year's project, which is funded by the Hans and Ria Messer Foundation, 16 students from 7 countries are jointly investigating how light pollution affects the ecological balance in coastal waters. In open water experiments, they are investigating whether artificial light at night promotes the biomass production of nutrient algae. These experiments are being carried out at research institutes in Cabo Verde, Chile, Finland, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Spain and Wales/UK. At the beginning of March, all participants came to the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel to prepare the content of the experiments. From April, the binational teams of two will begin practical work at the various locations and then return to GEOMAR in October with the data obtained and analyse it together.
