Title
Riffe der Ostsee - Vorkommen und Klimaschutzleistung von Fucus und Saccharina in der deutschen AWZ
General information
This project contributes to achieving the German government's goals of conserving biodiversity and mitigating the effects of the climate crisis. By assessing the carbon storage potential of brown algae forests, a foundation is being laid for including German seas in LULUCF reporting. At the same time, areas with particularly high climate value are being identified. A monitoring guideline will enable the monitoring of brown algae populations using a standardised method in order to obtain comparable data. The project also provides important insights, e.g. into possible source areas for natural recolonisation, the genetic differentiation of the various populations and temperature sensitivity, with regard to the feasibility of reintroducing brown algae to restored reefs. These insights will then be directly incorporated into the relevant action plans within and outside the protected areas in the EEZ.
