Abstract:
A toxic algal bloom of a mix of Karenia species has infested South Australia’s gulfs, Gulf St. Vincent and Spencer Gulf, since mid-March 2025. This presentation gives an overview of the ecological significance of this region, the oceanography of South Australian Gulfs (which are large inverse estuaries), and my early modelling predictions that were the first to suggest that the algal bloom may become a long-term problem. This presentation is dedicated to my doctor father Emeritus Professor Jan O. Backhaus.
