December 2, 2019: Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics Colloquium

Dr. Tobias Bayr, Marine Meteorology, Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics, GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel, Kiel (Germany): "Between worry and hope: What did we achieve in terms of climate protection in 2019?"

11:00, Lecture Hall, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

A lot happened in 2019 in terms of climate action and protection, which can make hope: Greta Thunberg and Fridays for Future (FFF) mobilized millions of peoples all around the globe so that we had e.g. in Germany the largest demonstrations ever. 26,800 scientists signed the statement of Scientists for Future in the German speaking countries and got behind FFF. Kiel and many other cities declared “climate emergency”.

But on the other hand, on an international level we are still far away to limit global to 1.5 or 2°C. The German government passed in September 2019 a climate law which was criticized as not ambitious enough and with which they will most probably fail to fulfill their own emission reduction goals.

So a lot happened in terms of climate action and protection this year and in this talk I want to give an end-of-the-year review about the things that may worry us and the things that can make hope.
