Never before throughout the satellite record has there been as little sea ice in the Arctic in late November as this year. This record-low sea-ice coverage has once again raised awareness of the rapidly shrinking sea-ice cover in the Arctic Ocean. In this presentation, I will outline how soon we can expect an Arctic Ocean without sea ice during summer. Doing so, I will explain in particular why the current observational record allows us to robustly determine the future evolution of sea ice with no need to employ complex climate model simulations. In passing, I will also generally touch on the relationship of observations and models in building a robust understanding of the climate system of our planet.
