Abstract:
An overview is given of developments in our understanding of barotropic transport and its variability in the North Atlantic Ocean going back to early work in the 1960’s and ending with an analysis of transport and its variability in the VIKING20 model configuration. Of particular interest is the important role played by the nonlinear advection terms in the momentum equation.
