"Hydrothermal Systems Associated with Submarine Arc Volcanoes: Insight into the Transfer of Metals to the Seafloor"

Public Evening Lecture and Award Ceremony for Dr. Cornel de Ronde

Abstract: Hydrothermal Systems and Underwater Volcanos in the Southwest Pacific

As part of the Pacific Ring of Fire numerous underwater volcanos and hot vents dominate the sea floor from New Zealand to Japan. Here, heat from the upper mantle is released to the ocean, along with the formation of metal-rich deposits and unique ecosystems. The investigation of hydrothermal systems allows insight of the processes inside a volcano including the transport of these metals through volcanos to the sea floor and the formation of deposits which are rich of copper, zinc or gold.
