Our World is the Ocean

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, GEOMAR is once again hosting an Open House from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on its campus on the east bank. Visitors of all ages will gain exciting insights into ocean research. The research vessel ALKOR will also be lowering its gangway this year, inviting visitors to learn about scientific work on board. Anyone who’s always wanted to know what researchers take with them when they head out to sea for a few weeks can even pack their own expedition box.

In the “Seagoing Technologies” area, model enthusiasts will showcase their replicas of research vessels, and the mini-ROV will demonstrate how a diving robot works. There will also be information on apprenticeships and career opportunities at GEOMAR.

In the main building, the library invites visitors to linger in its cozy armchairs. Here, history comes to life: images, logbook entries, and accompanying texts guide visitors back to the years 1925 through 1927 via an interactive story map, when the first METEOR embarked on its legendary Atlantic expedition.

In the conference area, it’s “Roll film!” The expedition cinema offers popcorn and – in collaboration with the International Marine Film Festival CINEMARE – films from research expeditions across the world’s oceans.

What questions are currently driving marine research? And how are scientists investigating these questions? Answers to these questions are provided by the lectures and presentations from the Ocean Science Show by GEOMAR scientists.

The Ocean Crew will present excerpts from their new acrobatic musical “Unter Wasser” (Underwater).

In addition, guided tours will offer a behind-the-scenes look at various areas of work at GEOMAR.

This event is part of the “Ahoi Ostufer” festival at the Kiel Seefischmarkt and “Science comes to Town.”

Please note: Due to this large-scale event, there is no parking available on the GEOMAR grounds. Please use public transportation if possible. Additionally, the Schwentine ferry from the Reventlou pier is operating on a special schedule. Our tip: Come by bike.
