HOSST was initially launched in 2012 by the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel as well as the University of Kiel and the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. HOSST funding is provided by the German Helmholtz Association. All trainees have a supervisor in Kiel and in Halifax. Recently the transatlantic Partner TOSST recruited another five doctoral students. In total there are 38 PhD-students currently active in the HOSST / TOSST programme on both sides of the Atlantic. Participants come from all areas of marine research, the transdisciplinary programme will contribute into the development of an overall picture of the Atlantic.
