Abstract:
Research into autonomous underwater, surface and aerial observation platforms is a large activity at NTNU Departments of Engineering Cybernetics and Marine Technology, focusing on control algorithms, autonomy, instrumentation and approaches to adaptive and optimal sampling. SINTEF Ocean has a research group dedicated to physical–biogeochemical ocean modelling and data analysis, with research and innovation activities spanning fisheries, aquaculture, marine energy and environmental management. The concept of the "observation pyramid" connects ocean models with multi-scale observation platforms, where model forecasts and data assimilation are used to plan and steer both satellite and in situ observations, and the resulting measurements are assimilated back into the model to continuously improve it. We will give an overall presentation of ocean observation and modelling activities at NTNU and SINTEF, as well as a proof of concept study where the observation pyramid was tested in a coordinated field campaign including the HYPSO hyperspectral satellite program, an autonomous surface unit and the SINMOD ocean model.
