Portugal strengthens Cooperation in Marine Research

The Portuguese ambassador in Germany visits GEOMAR

14 June 2017/Kiel. Portugal's geographical position at the Atlantic Ocean has played a crucial role throughout its history. The country owes its status as a world power in the sixteenth century to its sailors who opened new trade routes around the world. On the other hand, the capital of Lisbon, in 1755, experienced the devastating effects of natural hazards from the sea. Reason enough to have a vital interest in seas and oceans also in the present. This is why Portugal has made major investments in marine research over the last few years and is currently consolidating its network of international co-operations in this area. Against this backdrop, the Portuguese Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency João António Da Costa Mira Gomes, yesterday visited the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
In an in-depth discussion he talked with GEOMAR director Professor Peter Herzig about GEOMAR's existing projects with Portuguese partners as well as future opportunities for cooperation. A further focus of the visit was the topic of marine technology, which professor Herzig and ambassador Gomes deepened during a visit to GEOMAR's Technology and Logistics Centre.
"Portugal is very active in marine research. We are therefore very pleased about the interest in the work of GEOMAR. The country is already an important partner for us. This will intensify in the near future, "stressed Professor Herzig after the visit.
