Scientific Advisory Board confirms excellent research at GEOMAR

This year, the focus was on the research divisions “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” and “Dynamics of the Ocean Floor”

26.09.2023/Kiel. The Scientific Advisory Board of GEOMAR Helmholz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel once again confirmed the excellence of the research of “Team GEOMAR” after a two-day review. This year, the international panel specifically reviewed the areas of “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” and Dynamics of the Ocean Floor”. Prior to the meeting, the members of the Scientific Advisory Board gained further insights into the activities of younger researchers in particular at the internal “GEOMAR Science Day”.

The current and planned activities of the research divisions “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” and “Dynamics of the Ocean Floor” were at this year’s focus of the evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel – and they were once again rated as “excellent”. The twelve members of the international committee informed themselves about the research at GEOMAR during lectures and poster presentations as well as targeted discussions. Its feedback and advice are a valuable input to further develop the scientific strategy of the centre. Detailed recommendations are expected in the coming weeks.

“The successful visit and the positive feedback from our Scientific Advisory Board not only confirm the excellence of our research, but also underline the commitment and passion of all staff members,” emphasises Director Professor Dr Katja Matthes. “This encourages us in our mission to further deepen our understanding of the ocean system and contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for pressing societal issues.”

Before the evaluation, members of the advisory board were given an insight into the diverse research activities at the “GEOMAR Science Day”. About 250 colleagues from research devisions, the directorate, administration and central facilities took part in the internal exchange. In addition to short lectures, the programme included poster presentations and career advice, presentations of large-scale equipment and the visualisation laboratory ARENA as well as visits to the coral laboratory and the central core and rock repository.
