"Our World is the Ocean"

GEOMAR Open Day at the "Ahoy Eastern Shore" Festival

16. August 2022/Kiel. How do you explore the expanses of the deep sea? How does plastic waste in the ocean threaten the marine environment? What do Anschütz and Einstein have to do with marine research? If you are looking for answers to these and many other questions about the ocean or are generally interested in the wet two-thirds of the surface of our planet, you are invited to the Open Day of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel on August 21, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will take place within the framework of the festival "Ahoy Eastern Shore" in Kiel-Wellingdorf.

"Our world is the ocean". This is the motto of this year's Open Day at GEOMAR, which will take place on August 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kiel Seefischmarkt. The research world of GEOMAR is large and wide-ranging. Dive with us virtually into the depths of the oceans in the 360-degree cinema ARENA, learn more about the changes taking place in our seas due to climate change, pollution and use. How can we protect our oceans, but also use them sustainably, where do they harbor dangers and how can we recognize them in time? No matter in which direction the eye wanders, at the Open Day at GEOMAR one is right in the middle of the still largely unexplored underwater worlds.

There are activities for young and old: At lectures in the lecture hall of GEOMAR, visitors can learn from researchers about the importance of seagrass for the climate, how fast the sea level is rising now and in the future, or where freshwater can be found in the salty sea. At many information booths and hands-on activities, interested visitors will gain deeper insights into the current topics of marine research. Young researchers will also be taking part once again: Young people from the "Friday Researchers' Club" and other school projects will present the results of their work. In the Technology and Logistics Center, visitors can get to know the latest marine technology, such as the remote-controlled deep-sea robot PHOCA, autonomous underwater vehicles and innovative observation systems. Here you can even control realistic models of underwater vehicles yourself. For our younger guests, there will be children's book readings or the opportunity to make puppets out of marine litter.

The Open Day at GEOMAR is embedded in the event "Ahoy Eastern Shore". This also includes the Wellingdorf district festival, which this year is integrated for the first time with the Seefischmarkt, where there is a large festival mile with many offers for young and old.
"We would like to take all visitors into our ocean world. With us, they can immerse themselves in the unknown and fascinating underwater worlds and certainly take home a lot of new knowledge," says Dr. Andreas Villwock, from GEOMAR's public relations department.

The detailed program of the open day can be found here.

Date: Sunday, August 21, 2022, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Venue: GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Wischhofstr. 1-3, 24148 Kiel.

Please note:

Due to the large construction site for the new GEOMAR building, we have adjusted the visitor routing on this year's Open Day at the Seefischmarkt site. The Schwentine quay is closed at the area of the construction site. Please follow the signs to the individual venues.

Due to the major event "Ahoy Ostufer" at the Seefischmarkt, there are no parking possibilities in the area of GEOMAR. Please use public transportation or the designated parking areas if possible. Furthermore, the Schwentine ferry operates from the pier Reventlou according to a special schedule.
Our tip: Come by bike.
