Seamounts off Cabo Verde: High Biodiversity and Strong Ecological Connectivity in the Ocean
The biological diversity of seamounts around the Cape Verde islands has been brought together in a comprehensive synthesis. The researchers show that these seamounts provide habitats for many species – from microorganisms to large marine vertebrates – and act as key nodes in the ocean. The study is based on a systematic assessment of existing data and also describes ecological, economic and societal dimensions of these environments. The results highlight their importance for biodiversity and connectivity and make clear that use and protection need to be considered together. Researchers from several GEOMAR research divisions contributed to the study, bringing together expertise in marine biology, oceanography and geosciences.
