Berlin: Breaking the Surface. Women in Marine Research

Exhibition at the Wissenschaftsforum Berlin

Marine research would be inconceivable without the work of women in science. Their findings make a decisive contribution to a better understanding of the oceans and to advancing current scientific questions. Nevertheless, their contributions do not receive the recognition they deserve. The exhibition Breaking the Surface. Women in Marine Research focuses precisely on these perspectives. Personal insights into the everyday research lives of these female scientists are complemented by portraits by the photographer Marzena Skubatz. Notes, stories and visual impressions offer direct access to the people behind the science and their individual approaches to the ocean.

Professor Dr Katja Matthes, Director of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and Chair of the German Alliance for Marine Research, is also part of the exhibition and is among the women from the field of marine research featured in the portraits.

Having already been presented last year at the Maritime Museum Hamburg (IMMH), the exhibition can now be seen at the Wissenschaftsforum Berlin.

Breaking the Surface is an initiative of the University of Hamburg and the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg, supported by the German Alliance for Marine Research and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
