Helen Grisar: Deep-Sea Metals

Exhibition on Research, Mining, and Manganese Nodules in the Deep Sea

For her exhibition, running from May to October 2026 at the Geological and Mineralogical Museum in Kiel, artist Helen Grisar drew inspiration from GEOMAR’s expedition reports. This allowed her to combine scientific facts with atmospheric design. Her work with acrylic and chalk creates a somber mood, resulting in surfaces that are not always entirely legible. These areas evoke the unpredictability of the deep sea.

The narrative level, in which a ship’s cook tells his niece about an expedition, gives viewers a deeper insight into life on a research vessel and the findings of the journey.
