MarData fulfills important bridging function in research
Mid-term evaluation finds Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science to play a crucial role in education of young scientists
Regular evaluations are key to ensure the quality of scientific programs. For this purpose, the Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science (MarDATA) welcomed an international scientific review panel, representatives of the Helmholtz Information and Data Science Academy (HIDA) and the Helmholtz President Professor Dr. Wiestler to GEOMAR for its midterm evaluation at the end of January.
Over two days, MarDATA doctoral researchers, supervisors, members of the MarDATA Steering Board and external cooperation partners presented scientific progress, structural insights and future plans to the invited experts from computer science, marine sciences and structural early career support. A highlight of the review was the poster session with most of the MarDATA doctoral researchers from Kiel, Bremen and Bremerhaven on Tuesday evening.
In the end, the review panel agreed: MarDATA plays a leading role in the education of young scientists at the interface between marine sciences and computer/data sciences. Accordingly, the reviewer strongly recommend a continuation of the Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science.
About MarDATA
MarDATA is a graduate school, financed by the Helmholtz Association. It aims to define and educate a new type of marine data scientists by introducing and embedding researchers from computer sciences and mathematics into ocean sciences, covering a broad range from supercomputing and modelling, (bio)informatics, robotics, to statistics and big data methodologies.
