Coastal waters of Schleswig-Holstein show delayed and spatially variable responses to environmental change
Hydrographic conditions in the coastal waters of Schleswig-Holstein vary strongly in both space and time. The researchers analysed differences between Baltic Sea lagoons, the North Sea Wadden Sea and nearshore stations using a three-year measurement series (2021–2024), focusing in particular on salinity and temperature. The results show delayed responses to heavy rainfall and river discharge, with impacts in the Husum Bay after around six days and a lag of roughly seven weeks following Elbe flood events in the Wadden Sea. In addition, summer temperature peaks and frost events associated with mass mortality of barnacles were observed. The study shows how strongly coastal ecosystems respond to environmental change and highlights the importance of high-resolution monitoring for understanding these dynamics.
