Scientific Interests

I am developing and applying new "heavy" stable isotope systems as proxies for a wide variety of biogeochemical processes and geological settings.

I am focusing on:

1. Marine sedimentary processes

2. Weathering

3. Magmatic processes, in particular in subduction zones

The aim of my research is to better understand and "calibrate" stable isotope proxies in modern processes, making it possible to quantitativly apply these proxies to the recent past and deep time. Investigating periods of great change in Earth's history in turn allow me to draw conclusions to future developments in Earth's climate and how climate change impacts modern environments.

A selection of current research topics:

Investigation of changes in intensity and spatial extension of modern oxygen minimum zones using redox proxies like molybdenum and iron isotopes as well as iron speciation. The focus is on the mechanistic understanding of proxy signal development.

Development and application of barium isotopes as a (paleo-) water mass and marine productivity proxy

Development and application of barium and molybdenum isotopes as proxies for magmatic processes in subduction zones
