Central Facilities and Infrastructure

GEOMAR provides a state-of-the-art infrastructure for cutting-edge marine research. In addition to four research vessels, GEOMAR operates Germany’s only manned research submersible (JAGO) and deep-sea underwater vehicles (Kiel 6000, PHOCA and ABYSS) as well as various long-term observatories. Outstanding research facilities are available in the form of laboratories for isotope analysis, access to powerful high-performance computational facilities and one of the largest marine research libraries in Germany.

  • The mission of GEOMAR is:

To investigate the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes in the ocean and their interaction with the seafloor and the atmosphere.

  • The GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is member of the Helmholtz Association, the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung and the German Marine Research Konsortium (KDM).

On the international level, the institute cooperates with many institutions in the field of marine sciences. It is a member of the "Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans" (POGO).
